Find out what’s new in iLearn Insights for 2023, how to access it and where to get help with using the tool.

iLearn Insights is an easy to use reporting tool which allows teaching staff to visualise student activity and engagement in iLearn units. This article summarises the new and improved functions of iLearn Insights that are now available for you to use to monitor and increase student engagement in your unit.

You can now:

  • view a percentage score for student forum participation as one part of the unit engagement calculation
  • find out whether a student submitted an assignment from an onshore or offshore location
  • request a report for a group of students with data drawn from across all iLearn units (not just one iLearn unit). This report is useful for HoD’s, Course Directors and Department Administrators.

This PechaKucha presentation gives an overview of key iLearn Insights functions, including what’s new.

Access the recording of the February 2023 PechaKucha Zoom presentation for an overview of all the iLearn insights functions.

Here’s what’s new in iLearn Insights:

  1. Forum participation for unit engagement

Forum participation has been added to unit engagement. Now you can view forum participation based on number of discussions started and/or number of forum replies by each individual student.

(Initiative thanks to: Professor Denise Jepsen, Department of Management; Jeremy Hind, Manager Applications Services)
  2. Assignment submission location

We have added a ‘submission location’ column within the activity submissions page. This column highlights in red all assignments that have been submitted from offshore. Placing mouse on the ‘Offshore’ link also provides date of submission and number of onshore and offshore iLearn login within approximately 12 hours of assignment submission. If a combination of offshore and onshore login is identified then iLearn Insights will add an asterisk in-front of ‘*Offshore’ highlight.

(Initiative thanks to: Dr. Prashan Karunaratne, Senior Lecturer (Teaching and Leadership), Actuarial Studies & Business Analytics)
  3. Engagement report for a group of students across all iLearn units

HoD’s, Course Directors and Department Administrators can request a report based on a group of students. You provide the list of student names for whom you would like to view overall engagement data. When the report is run it will draw data from all iLearn units. For each student it will show all units they are currently enrolled in, engagement percentage for each unit, last iLearn accessed location, date last accessed, number of times they have logged in to iLearn within the last 7 days, whether they have completed the Academic Integrity and Consent Matters modules, as well as an overall unit engagement percentage.

  4. New variables available when sending emails to students

    Acknowledgement of Country

The following text can be added to an iLearn Insights email by inserting {#ACKNOWLEDGEMENT_OF_COUNTRY#} variable while composing any iLearn insights email.

    (Initiative thanks to: Dr. Morwenna Kirwan, Senior Teaching Fellow, Health Sciences;
Approved by: Leanne Holt, Pro Vice – Chancellor, Indigenous Strategy)

    MyLearn dashboard login link

The following text can be added to an iLearn Insights email by inserting {#PLAN_YOUR_STUDY_USING_MYLEARN#} variable while composing any iLearn insights email.

Here’s what else has been improved:

  1. Schedule email time

You can now schedule an email to be sent at any hour of the day or night.

(Initiative thanks to: Dr. Tim Doyle, Associate Professor, Health Sciences)
  2. Zoom participants name match

Sometimes Zoom does not save the student’s email address and in the past, this meant that iLearn Insights was not able to match a student’s Zoom participation against their student email. To overcome this issue, iLearn Insights will now match student first and last name if there is no email address stored against a student’s Zoom attendance.

However, we’ve also found that occasionally Zoom does not even store the last name, or stores a short name (for example Nicholas is stored as Nick). We have been working towards identifying these types of abnormalities and communicating with Zoom to resolve them. Unfortunately Zoom is a third party application and we do not have much control over it.
